Across Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries, monarchs and nobles assembled vast collections that they claimed contained art objects and natural specimens representing the entirety of the known world. In assembling these collections, European collectors ordered the world, asserting judgments on the value of natural materials, forms of labor, and forms of craftsmanship. The World Made Wondrous: The Dutch Collector’s Cabinet and the Politics of Possession assembles the collector’s cabinet of a fictive collector belonging to the wealthy merchant class in the 17th century Dutch Republic. The exhibition considers the journey of the objects, presenting narratives from indigenous voices, artists and craftspeople, and experts on climate science.
